Please join us for a discussion with former National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster on the strategic challenges the United States confronts and the need to restore strategic competence to American statecraft. His new book Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World is a cri de coeur for Americans to transcend today’s vitriolic politics and focus on the threats to security, freedom, and prosperity posed by America’s rivals in old and new arenas of competition. The book is a compelling story of how we have arrived at this moment, how our adversaries--including China and Russia--view the world, and what we must do to protect free and open societies and preserve peace.

H. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Stanford University. A native of Philadelphia, McMaster graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1984. He served as an Army officer for thirty-four years and retired as a Lieutenant General in 2018. He remained on active duty while serving as the 26th Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. McMaster taught history at West Point and holds a PhD in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This event is made possible by general CSIS support.
