Last week, Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the first visit by an Australian leader to China since 2016. That first visit of an Australian Prime Minister to China in seven years underscores the extent to which bilateral relations had deteriorated and reflects recent signs of easing tensions. Over the past several years, Australia’s relationship with China has reached historic lows as China sought to influence and control Australian domestic affairs and economically punished Australia for calling for an international investigation into COVID-19. With his election last May, Prime Minister Albanese promised that his government would stabilize Australia-China relations while maintaining Australia's core values and principles.
