The CSIS Australia Chair cordially invites you to A New Starting Point? The State of Australia-China Relations

Thursday, November 16, 2023 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm EST
Friday, November 17, 2023 9:00 am - 10:00 am AEST

Last week, Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the first visit by an Australian leader to China since 2016. That first visit of an Australian Prime Minister to China in seven years underscores the extent to which bilateral relations had deteriorated and reflects recent signs of easing tensions. Over the past several years, Australia’s relationship with China has reached historic lows as China sought to influence and control Australian domestic affairs and economically punished Australia for calling for an international investigation into COVID-19. With his election last May, Prime Minister Albanese promised that his government would stabilize Australia-China relations while maintaining Australia's core values and principles.

To assess how this visit met Australia’s goal of stabilizing relations with China, and what this means for the future trajectory of Australia's China policy, please join CSIS Senior Adviser and Australia Chair Charles Edel on Thursday, November 16 at 5pm EST for a discussion with Will Glasgow, Euan Graham, and Lavina Lee

CSIS's Australia Chair conducts independent policy research aimed at strengthening U.S.-Australia relations. The Chair is endowed through the generosity of Pratt Industries.
