Executive Training Program

The China Power Project offers several annual executive training programs for national defense and foreign affairs ministries from the Asia-Pacific region

The China Power Project offers annual executive training programs for government ministries of defense and foreign affairs from the Asia-Pacific region.  Each program brings 15-20 mid-level foreign officials or military officers to Washington, DC for seminars on international security and foreign affairs.

The following programs are run by Director of the China Power and Senior Fellow for Asian Security, Bonny Lin.

CSIS-Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Executive Program
 

Launched in 2007, seminar discussions address issues related to Asian regional security, U.S. foreign and security policy, and the future of the U.S.-Japan alliance.  Program objectives include:

  • Enhancing participants’ understanding of U.S. thinking on foreign and defense policy issues
  • Exposing participants to U.S. perspectives on global and regional affairs, U.S. domestic political issues, and U.S.-Japan alliance management
  • Enhancing participants’ abilities to effectively pursue Japan’s interests through a proactive role in international security affairs.
     

CSIS-Japanese Ministry of Defense (MOD) Executive Program
 

The first Japanese Ministry of Defense Executive Program was held in March 2006; subsequent CSIS-MOD programs have occurred since 2007.  Discussions focus on trends in global and regional security affairs, defense strategy and reform, and U.S.-Japan alliance management.  Program objectives include:

  • Enhancing participants’ understanding of U.S. thinking on foreign and defense policy issues
  • Exposing participants to U.S. perspectives on ways to expand the MOD’s technical and institutional capabilities
  • Enhancing Japan’s abilities to play a proactive role in international security affairs with the United States
     

CSIS-Taiwan Executive Program on International Security
 

Launched in 2001, the CSIS-Taiwan Executive Program is the longest-running executive program at CSIS.  Mid- and senior-level Taiwan military officers and civilian officials participate in seminars on several international security issues.  Program objectives include:

  • Increasing participants’ awareness of U.S. perspectives on international affairs
  • Assisting Taiwan’s on-going process of defense reform
  • Providing exposure to key experts and policy makers in the U.S. defense and policy communities
